Tottering by Gently

Annie Tempest’s classic weekly cartoon. First published in Country Life magazine in January 1994, Tottering by Gently depicts the everyday capers of Dicky and Daffy Tottering, and their family, at Tottering Hall. The tongue-in-cheek humour cleverly addresses differing social perspectives of our time.

OTHER TOTTERING PRODUCT

“Annie is a bit of England, she articulates the things which set us apart and which form our identity. She has created a cast of characters from a certain set, but her observations are social rather than political. They are gentler and beautifully observed.”

Sir Roy Strong, former head of the Victoria and Albert Museum

“It is because of Annie Tempest that most people read magazines backwards.”

Duke of Devonshire CBE, At Home with the Totterings, 2007

“Annie Tempest has been compared to Sir Osbert Lancaster… (her) beautifully observed drawings of Tottering’s interior features – chimney-pieces, furniture, portraits, porcelain and so forth – are all works of art in themselves…”

The Spectator
