PRESS RELEASE FROM TOTTERING-BY-GENTLY, NO 4 St. James's Street, London, SW1
CARTOON ART TRUST AWARDS

ANNIE TEMPEST, creator of TOTTERING-by-GENTLY,

WINS THE PRESTIGIOUS PONT PRIZE FOR  HER PORTRAYAL OF THE BRITISH CHARACTER
Pont, real name Graham Laidler, was best known for his inimitable series of cartoons 'The British Character'. Born in 1908, he died tragically young at 32 years old from Polio.  The Prize in his name is now in it's 15th year and previous winners have included such great names as Posy Simmons and Mac and , last year, the creators of the Alex strip in the Daily Telegraph.

On Wednesday night, the Cartoon Art Trust hosted a black tie dinner in Pall Mall at which Annie Tempest accepted her award from the lead singer of the pop group Madness, Graham McPherson, better known as Suggs.  For the last 15 years Annie has had a regular cartoon strip in Country Life Magazine which has attracted an International Following.  Tottering-by-Gently, the strip, is based in the fictional English county of North Pimmshire.  Under the guidance of her friend and mentor Raymond O'Shea of The O'Shea Gallery in St. James's Street, London, it has become a sought-after brand with over 20 licencees manufacturing a range of product and gift-ware.

" Annie is one of the few women cartoonists who have made it to the very top of the industy" reads the programme for the evening.  On hearing of her award, Annie was 'completely amazed' and added that it 'was the icing on the cake of a really fun career'.

For further information on this award and pictures of the evening contact Sue Kenton on above telephone number.
Michael Heath , of the Mail on Sunday, Private Eye and the Spectator won the Lifetime Achievement award.

WELSH GUARDS AFGHANISTAN APPEAL FUND

  • Give support to the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship.
  • Support to those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army; to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members.
  • Support to the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.
